Breast Reduction

Overview
If you feel that your breasts are out of proportion with the rest of your body, or you find it difficult to find clothes that fit properly or feel uncomfortable when taking part in active sport, a breast reduction operation can help. Large breasts can cause back pain, postural problems and distress for some women.

Breast reduction is an operation to reduce breast size and weight. Your breasts can also be made firmer with smaller areolas (the darker skin around your nipples). During a breast reduction operation Mr Nduka makes cuts around your breasts to remove excess fat and skin. Your remaining breast tissue is then re-shaped and stitched to make your breasts smaller. Your nipples will also be re-positioned.

Breast reduction surgery is carried out under a general anaesthetic and you will usually stay in hospital for two nights. You should also plan time off work after breast reduction surgery so that you can relax and recover at home. You will need to wear a special bra in the weeks following surgery to support your breasts while they settle into their new shape.

Important notes
There is always some scarring after a breast reduction operation and it is unlikely that you will be able to breast feed after a breast reduction. However, Mr Nduka will discuss this with you prior to your operation. In addition, you are likely to lose sensation in your nipples and this numbness may also cover part of your breasts as well.

  All operations carry risks as well as benefits. The chance of complications following breast reduction surgery depends on the type of operation and other factors such as your general health.
